Forthcoming events and celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of local legend - Sir Thomas Urquhart in 2011

COMPETITION FOR ARTIST/ILLUSTRATOR

Cromarty History Society is seeking an Illustrator for a Children’s Book on Sir Thomas Urquhart of Cromarty
A writing competition has been organised to raise knowledge of the life and legacy of one of Cromarty’s famous, if somewhat eccentric, sons - Sir Thomas Urquhart - amongst school age children on the Black Isle.
2011 is the 400th anniversary of Sir Thomas’ birth. The publication of a small booklet (approximately 24 pages, A5 size, plus covers) will celebrate this event and copies will be distributed free to all children in the upper stages of Black Isle primary schools, with any remainder being sold in local venues. The booklet will be illustrated in colour - with the illustrator commissioned once the winning writer has been selected - and we plan a print run of 1,000 copies.
Although the work of illustration will not begin until the winning writer has been selected at the end of August, we wish to select a potential illustrator as soon as possible. We are therefore inviting illustrators to submit to us by 30th June 2010 a sample black and white drawing of a scene from the life of Sir Thomas.
The scene we have selected is Sir Thomas writing at his desk in Cromarty Castle.
The selected illustrator will be expected to produce, by the end of October at the latest, a series of twelve coloured illustrations representing scenes from Sir Thomas’ life described in the writing. In return the illustrator will be paid a fee of £2,000.

Rules and Conditions
Open to all illustrators.
The drawing should be on A4 paper and may be in a medium of the illustrator’s choice.
The drawing should be unsigned but should be accompanied by the official entry form.
The closing date for receipt of entries is Wednesday 30th June 2010 and the selected illustrator will be notified by the end of July. Early submission is encouraged.
A panel of Independent judges will make the selection. The judges’ decision is final and no
correspondence will be entered into regarding the decision.
Those making the selection or involved with the organisation of this project in any direct way, are not eligible to enter.
Submitted drawings will become and remain the property of Cromarty History Society. The illustrations produced by the selected illustrator will likewise become and remain the property of Cromarty History Society and the Society reserves the right to incorporate them in the proposed booklet. They may also be used for exhibitions, publicity purposes and on the Society’s website.
Entrants requiring an acknowledgement of receipt should enclosed a stamped self-addressed
envelope.
Entry implies acceptance of these rules.
