A grant of £750 towards travel, materials and subsistence costs will also be paid. The residency is primarily intended to provide an opportunity for the winning artist to develop their own work in a new and inspiring environment. However the resident will also be expected to:
- Hold a public event i.e: a talk or an educational workshop together with a small informal exhibition.
- Write a short retrospective report about their residency.
- Leave behind a piece of their work for the Cromarty Collection.
Applications should be made directly to Cromarty Arts Trust, Ardyne, Bank Street, Cromarty, IV11 8YE not later than 31st June 2008. Applications should include no more than 5 photographs/written pieces of work and a brief statement (max 1000 words) about the themes which they would hope to explore or develop during the residency. Two relevant references should be provided. A Highland-based panel which will include an established artist and representatives of Arts Organisations and the Cromarty Arts Trust will then decide on a winner from 12 short-listed applicants.
2006 winner was Hanna Tuulikki, graduate from the Glasgow School of Art. Her work focused on sound. Airs of the Sea involved collecting breaths from residents of Cromarty. “During the month-long residency in Cromarty, people from across the local community were invited to record the sound of their breathing. From a collection of 100 of these recordings a sound piece was created, imitating the sounds of the gradual process, beginning with visiting people at their work or home as well as chance encounters on the street. The piece was exhibited in Cromarty Stables from the ceiling with 100 silk-screened portraits of the participants – printed from the hand-drawn originals – and a hammock suspended from roof beams which acted as a listening point.”(Hanna). LLast year's winner was Lindsay Boyd who specialises in textiles, and exhibited her work throughout September 2007 at The Stables Full details of the work of the Cromarty Arts Trust, its facilities at The Stables and its past artists-in-residence can be found at www.cromartyartstrust.co.uk.
