Cromarty Ukulele Weekend with Finlay Allison: 15 - 17 March 2024
It’s Ukulele Time again! Finlay Allison, presenter of the Ukulele School at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections returns to Cromarty with four stand alone workshops. Lots of songs, laughter and fun to recharge your ukulele skills, raise your game and put new juice into your playing.
Finlay will show you how to improve your strumming, add shuffles and licks to old favourites try some new approaches and stimulate your musical taste buds.
As you sing your way through some well-known songs you’ll be having so much fun you won’t notice as you’ll build a toolbox of techniques.
Covering songs and arrangements in the key of C, then moving on to other keys, D, G A and even F! (If you can play C, Am, F and G7, it’s a short step to the next stages).
The weekend kicks off on Friday 15 March with dinner and a performance by Simon Kempston, Scottish singer songwriter and leading fingerstyle guitarist.
There will be four workshops of varying levels, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. This format lets your playing progress over the two days or you can dip in and out, attend as many or as few as you wish. Scroll down for workshop details.
We'll all get together after dinner on the Saturday night in the Old Brewery for an informal ukulele jam session.

£235 includes bed and fully cooked breakfast on Fruday and Saturday, lunch on Saturday and Sunday, dinner on Friday and Saturday, all four workshops and Simon Kempston's Friday night performance. Workshop 1 : 10am - 12noon - The Stables £15
Ewan MacColl Folk songs on the Ukulele. A ukulele player’s take on one of the great folk writers of the 20th century. You’ll know Ewan’s ‘Dirty Old Town’ from the playing of The Pogues. This workshop will look at some more of MacColl’s legacy in music.

Burt Bacharach for Ukulele. A ukulele workshop looking at some of Burt Bacharach’s most famous songs, Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head, Close to You and others made famous by dusty Springfield and the Carpenters.

Sunday 17 March
Workshop 1 : 10am - 12noon - The Stables £15
Play Country Blues on the Ukulele. The uke is perfectly adaptable to the varied styles of American country blues. From Mississippi John Hurt to Taj Mahal and from Doc Watson to Arlo Guthrie, this entertaining workshop will give you a chance to try damping, runs and breaks, fingerpicking and more!

The Beatles Now and Then for Ukulele. Now and Then tops the charts in 2023.Their greatest achievements go on and on. From oldies to the current hit. Grab your ukulele and we’ll see where it all fits together.
