In a world that seems increasingly in crisis, more and more writers are turning to nature. Paying close attention to our surroundings can offer valuable space for reflection, a chance to reconnect, and moments in which to slow down and notice the small things that matter. In this relaxed four-week evening course, suitable for writers of all levels and genres, we will look at how to bring the natural world onto the page – even in the depths of winter.
Each session will feature: · shared reading and discussion of texts · guided writing exercises, prompts to take home – working towards a longer piece · optional feedback and opportunities for sharing Together, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere, we will hone our observational and descriptive skills, find inspiration in unexpected places, and learn how to weave place, weather and the seasons into fiction, poetry and personal narrative. Eleanor Updegraff is a writer of short stories, haiku and narrative non-fiction, who finds inspiration in the natural world. She often combines writing and walking, and is currently working on a book about rain. An experienced and careful editor who understands how to help a writer’s unique voice sing, she has led workshops in classrooms and forests, and is also a literary translator from German.
