CORDAGE MAKING WORKSHOP
Hosted by Hungarian artist and rope maker Hanna Varga. Inspired by the local maritime history in Cromarty.
You are invited to participate in an activity our ancestors have been doing on this planet for thousands of years. You will learn and practice traditional reverse-wrap string making by hand that is the basic element of a rope. We will come together in a physical space to engage our hands with this tactile craft as a group, transforming plant fibres with care and attention into something beautiful and functional. I will teach you how to tie your shoe laces in a new way and we might even end up learning to tie a footrope knot!We will be using wild growing plant fibres that were foraged from the local coastal landscape.You will be guided how to make natural string by hand whilst teaching you about the historical and cultural significance of this endangered heritage craft, nature art, local flora, and foraged plant fibres.
All materials and tools are provided. Suitable for beginners. No prior experience necessary.
