“Nan Shepherd’s writing has found a perfect musical equivalent in Jenny Sturgeon’s stunning, snow-encrusted and sun-dappled songs. She has created a work of rare beauty: to hear The Living Mountain is to hear the song of the Cairngorms.” Folk Radio
The Living Mountain is a multi media performance of film and music performed by Jenny Sturgeon (vocals, guitar, keys), Alice Allan (cello) and Sarah Hayes (bass, keys, samples). Inspired by Scottish writer Nan Shepherd's celebrated book of the same name, this audio-visual performance is accompanied by film curated by Shona Thomson; including stunning imagery from Scotland The Big Picture, filmmakers Robyn Spice and Hannah Bailey and archive film from National Library of Scotland Moving Image Archive.
Devised by musician Jenny Sturgeon, the project explores Nan's writing, the Cairngorms and human connections with the wild through lyrical, melodic and visual interpretation. The meditative experience of the combined audio and imagery are a soothing and poignant exploration of what it means to connect with a landscape and to find a sense of place.
Jenny’s album ‘The Living Mountain’ was nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year awards in 2021, and in 2020 won Best Acoustic at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.
