Join our international artist-in-residence, R.L. Gibson, in making mandala variations using watercolour & and embroidery. Learn how these traditional sacred circles of meditation work like cryptograms – graphic captures of a place, a movement or feeling that can serve to help focus your creative energy and use colour & mark-making as a tool of personal discovery. Workshop will include: A brief & broad description & history of mandalas and their variants from across a wide spectrum of cultures & traditions from Aztec to astrological and even Celtic consideration. Learning about your colour & mark-making instincts. Learning the mechanics of drawing mandalas from simple to complex. Drawing & simple watercolour techniques Both formal & unstructured embroidery techniques No drawing, painting or embroidery skills required - all abilities welcome!  Come have a little fun. The aim of this workshop is to explore the versatility of painting and drawing through the process of mark-making and how to translate our direct response to the landscape.  Working directly in the landscape, we will explore ways of working in sketchbooks, translating this up to larger-scale pieces outdoors.  Throughout, tutor Jonathan Shearer, will provide books and information on a variety of artists who work outdoors and will demonstrate many different, useful techniques. This course will include lots of tutor one-to-one input and be a fun, friendly weekend, open to all. The course is repeated again  on 20 & 21 July. £110. Includes lunch each day plus tea & coffee.  A materials list of basic supplies will be emailed to you in advance. Accommodation is available in the Old Brewery. Explore with established artist and tutor, Morag Tweedie, the relief printing technique known as 'lost-lino' or 'reduction printing' to produce a series of colourful prints without the use of a printing press. The process includes designing and transferring your image onto a lino block, cutting the block for the first and successive prints (hence the term ‘Lost Lino’), mixing and applying ink and making a series of registered prints on a range of papers. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as for those with some experience.  All materials supplied. £65.  Tea/coffee provided; please bring a packed lunch. This two-day portraiture course will offer you the opportunity for intensive study under the tuition of artist, Anna Wimbledon. We will aim to produce a 'finished' painting of the portrait model over the duration of the weekend.  There will be demonstrations and guidance in technique, colour and form with plenty of one-one contact.
