As the rise of poetry native to Instagram gives birth to a new literary genre providing words of comfort and clarity to millions of young people, unbeknown to the cynics who may not approve of it’s literary prowess, it has given way to a renaissance in spoken word for those seeking more resonant prose beyond their screens. Performed by the punchy and diverse cast of Cameron Fulton, Danielle Jam, Robert Elkin and Charlotte Driessler, this is Under Milk Wood for and by millenials, exposing the inner thoughts, fears and hopes behind the Instagram filters and the 280 character tweets.  Playing like a frenzied scroll through a social media feed, the show takes the audience on an exhilarating and emotional journey through the characters’ lives. Ben has a varied orchestral, chamber music and solo career, as a member of the BBCSSO since 2015, director of London Concertante, leader of Glasgow New Music Expedition, 1st violin of the Brodick Quartet, and regularly guesting with orchestras and groups around the country including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Dunedin Consort, and further afield Le Circle de l’Harmonie in Paris. Ben spends his spare time rock-climbing and hill walking, preferably in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland (when the weather allows!) Katrina Lee - Violin Katrina Lee is a Yorkshire violinist, who began studying from the age of eight at the Kirklees Music School with Ralph Barker. In 2010, Katrina received a scholarship to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduating with first class honours in 2014 and masters in 2016 under the tutelage of Andrea Gajic receiving the highest mark for her final recital. During her time at the Conservatoire, she won multiple awards including the Ian D Watt award, Hilda Bailey Prize, Robert Highgate Scholarship, Governors’ Recital Prize for Strings and Chamber Music, Mabel Glover Prize for String Quartet as well as prizes outside; the Musicians company Goldman award in 2015, scholarship from the Stephen Bell charitable trust and an award at the Queen Sophie Charlotte international competition in Germany. After joining the Scottish Ensemble 2012 tour performing with Anthony Marwood at the Wigmore Hall, Katrina was also selected Scottish Ensemble Young Artist in 2013 and 2015 with opportunities playing with Lawrence Power and joining the ensemble in residencies around Scotland. Katrina was appointed the Principal 2nd Violin position with Scottish Ballet in February 2017 and has enjoyed learning all the rich ballet repertoire including Swan Lake, Nutcracker and most recently Prokofiev’s enchanting ‘Cinderella’. As well as orchestral playing, Katrina loves chamber music and is in the Brodick String Quartet and the Escocia duo, a Violin and Classical Guitar duo. Her playing work has taken her to lots of countries including most recent the Lincoln Centre in New York. Other places include China, South America, Hong Kong, Canada, Iceland, Italy and Prague. Katrina plays on a modern violin (2003) based on a Guaneri del Gesu by Andrew Fairfax and a bow (1955) by Louis Henri Gillet. Alice Allen -  Cello Alice Allen grew up in Banchory, Aberdeenshire and was formerly young artist in residence with the Scottish Ensemble. She has performed live on BBC Radio 3 and Radio Scotland and has recorded with many leading folk artists including former BBC young traditional musician of the year Robyn Stapleton and MG ALBA Scots Singer of the year Iona Fyfe. Alice's playing has taken her to the BBC Proms, the Wigmore Hall, Europe and India. Alice works with many of the country’s leading performing groups including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish Ensemble, Liverpool Philharmonic, London Concertante and the Brodick Quartet. Alice performs regularly with fiddler Alastair Savage and is the Enterprise Music Scotland Ensemble in Resience 2019-21 as one half of the duo GAIA. Rhoslyn Lawton - Viola Hailing from the small village of Llansoy in South Wales, Rhoslyn Lawton began her musical studies at the age of five and at the age of 16 took up a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. She then went on to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music where she graduated from the Master of Arts programme with Distinction.  As a soloist and a chamber musician, Rhoslyn has performed in many of the leading concert venues across the UK. In 2007 she performed the European premiere of Jose Lezcano’s Sonata for viola and guitar and in 2008 she gave her concerto debut performing Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante. In 2013 she performed Elliot Carter’s Au Quai in the Duke’s Hall RAM as part of a celebration for the late composer. From 2012-2016 Rhoslyn was a member of the Alauda Quartet with whom she studied for her Masters in Chamber Music at the Hochschule fur Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. The quartet was appointed Junior Fellows in Chamber Music at the Royal Academy of Music in 2013 and were selected as Park Lane Group artists in the 2015 series.  Since 2017 she has been a member of the Brodick Quartet giving recitals regularly across Scotland. In 2016 Rhoslyn was excited to become a member of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.  As an active orchestral player, she has worked with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Scottish Session Orchestra.  

Charlie Grey and Joseph Peach make music on the piano and fiddle. They are Scottish folk musicians, interested in making music filled with spontaneity, sensitivity and freedom. Their performance will feature a screening of Air Iomall - a film and suite of new music, inspired by now uninhabited islands deep in the North Atlantic - some of Scotland’s most remote, and remarkable places. Travelling aboard the Dutch tall ship Wylde Swan, the duo visited and wrote music inspired by the histories, people, and landscapes of these mysterious, wild places, including: The Shiant Isles, North Rona, The Flannan Isles, Sula Sgeir and St Kilda. Hamish Macleod’s film documents the duo on this once in a lifetime experience, providing a visually stunning, sensitive insight in to these under-documented and enigmatic landscapes. The trio formed in 2011 whilst students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where they were chosen as Young Artists in Residence, and have since gone on to develop a reputation as one of the top piano trios in the country, known for their passionate performances across the UK and further afield.  Kristi Kapten is a prize-winning Estonian pianist. She received her Bachelor's Degree in 2010 from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT), before attending the RCS, studying with Fali Pavri, receiving prizes in several prestigious competitions and graduating with Distinction. In 2011, Kristi won 1st prize in the II Tallinn International Piano Competition. In 2017 she obtained a doctorate at the EAMT.  Violinist Rachel Spencer enjoys a wide-ranging freelance career as a soloist and chamber musician. Originally from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire, she studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Peter Lissauer and James Clark, and subsequently at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Alexander Janiczek, graduating with Distinction and a diploma for outstanding performance. As a chamber musician Rachel has appeared with groups including the Assembly Project, Ensemble Perpetuo, as a guest with the Maxwell and Edinburgh Quartets and with artists including Benjamin Grosvenor, Charles Mutter, David Watkin and Alasdair Beatson. Passionate about music education, Rachel has been an artist for outreach scheme Live Music Now since 2011, a position which has seen her lead music education projects across the UK, Denmark and the Middle East.  Cellist Duncan Strachan was brought up in the west highlands of Scotland and read music at St Catherine's College, Oxford where he graduated with a Double First Class Honours. He then went on to study for a Masters degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Robert Irvine. Duncan is cellist in the Maxwell Quartet, and artistic director at the Loch Shiel Spring Festival.

It will be an evening of vocal music written by some of today’s most promising and some already established composers including Jake Runestad, Morten Lauritsen,  James MacMillan and Eric Whitacre. The idea behind this concert is to allow the listener to be transported, through the medium of song, to a place of reflection and peace. The music we are presenting goes against all the busyness of the world around us and allows the listener to pause and reflect and enjoy the moment. The vast majority of the pieces will have a slower pace to them to allow you to enjoy the rich harmonic world these fine composers have created. We hope you will join us on this musical journey. DUE TO COVID-19: POSTPONED, NEW DATE TBC Abigail Millar Todd is a classically trained, 20 year old harpist from Avoch. She began music through the Feis, before branching out from traditional music to classical when she began studying at Aberdeen City Music School at the age of 12. She later studied at the Music School of Douglas Academy and Chetham’s School of Music. An extremely influential figure in her life during this period was her teacher, the jazz harpist Alina Bzhezhinska Lazorkina. After leaving school, she moved to Oslo, Norway to study under the tutelage of Isabelle Perrin, artistic director of the World Harp Congress, soloist and recipient of the French Knighthood of the Order of Arts. Abigail will perform a variety of music including the works of Hindemith, Bach, Caplet, Spohr and Tchaikovsky. She will also play some of her own compositions. Anyone that attended Abigail's 2018 Stables concert will tell you - this is an afternoon not to be missed! DUE TO COVID-19: POSTPONED UNTIL 2021, DATE TBC Bold, creative, and original; Tannara (Owen Sinclair, Robbie Greig, Becca Skeoch and Joseph Peach) have established themselves as one of the UK’s most interesting and unique contemporary folk groups. Formed in 2014, the band came about as a natural extension of the four members’ love of making music together. Fuelled by this, they’ve covered considerable musical ground over the past five years. With a background in Scotland’s native traditions, their ceaseless musical development is a melting pot of ideas, genres and sounds, from indie rock to electronica, as well as Scotland’s vibrant and diverse folk scene. Unafraid to experiment, their music is an electrifying meeting place for a world of sounds; punchy and clean, riotous and gritty, tender and honest. On fiddle, harp, guitar, accordion and vocals, Tannara make an intensely considered musical world which is uniquely theirs. Their debut album “Trig” was released in 2016. Produced by Rachel Newton, their first offering as a band was a raw, joyous, reflection of a band finding its sound. It was received to great acclaim, from critics and audiences alike. Described by Living Tradition Magazine as “Simply Outstanding”, it was longlisted for “Album of the Year” at the 2016 Scots Trad Music Awards, the same year in which the band were nominated for “Up and Coming Artist of the Year”. From open air festivals, to intimate housconcerts, and everything in between, the band love playing live. A fact that’s reflected by their so far busy schedule of performances and radio appearances across Europe, with highlights including Cambridge Folk Festival, and Festival Interceltique de Lorient, a performance described as “Fiery and Graceful” by The Herald. The band released their second album “Strands” at Celtic Connections Festival 2019. The album represents a significant development for the band, who’ve spent the past two years writing and recording it. 'Strands' was produced by guitarist Owen Sinclair and accordionist Joseph Peach, with input and guidance from Lau’s Martin Green. They’ve created a whole world around the band’s music; of found sounds and samples, synthesisers, and guest performances from Mattie Foulds on percussion and Josie Duncan on backing vocals. DUE TO COVID-19: POSTPONED UNTIL 2021, DATE TBC Martin Stephenson has been one of the UK’s most perceptive songwriters and best-loved musicians for over 30 years. Born in Durham and raised in nearby mining village of Washington, he  excelled at table tennis before his musical abilities pushed their way to the front, but when they did, he was hooked. “My teacher was like a cross between Allen Ginsberg and Jim Morrison, he was like this Vietnam hippie,” remembers Stephenson. “He had a massive cosmic perception and  taught loads of young lads from rough backgrounds how to get rid of the competitive spirit that brought a lot of unhappiness.” Before he was anything else, Stephenson was a busker. It was the beginning of an instinct, a need, for live performance that continues to this day. “I used to see a sunny morning when I was 18 and thought ‘I’m just going to go on the street and play, nobody knows who I am anyway.’ The doo-wop singers used to do that, stand on street corners. That’s how I started off.”  Stephenson formed his band The Daintees in his teens with the deliberate intention of showcasing a broad range of musical styles.  Kitchenware Records, based in Newcastle, had already become one of the most important indie labels of the decade with a roster that included Prefab Sprout, Hurrah! and the Kane Gang. Stephenson’s richly detailed and nuanced songwriting was the perfect fit, and the distribution deal via London Records gave the band a real platform. His 1986 debut album Boat To Bolivia displayed an extraordinary maturity, from the country charm of Candle In The Middle to the Cohenesque acoustics of Rain, and sounds as fresh today as it did then. A degree of UK chart success followed with the top 40 albums Gladsome, Humour & Blue in 1988 and Salutation Road in 1990. After 1992’s The Boy’s Heart, Stephenson called time on the original Daintees, setting about a solo career and the prolific outpouring of quality material that shows no sign of slowing down. Never pandering to a particular scene, his dexterity and ease with a varied mix of musical styles was immediately apparent. His path was destined to be a lifelong journey through the music he loved: folk, ragtime, jazz, rockabilly, punk-pop, country blues and more. He has honed his skills over the years but his lightness of touch and engaging spontaneity remain. For him music is a vocation, not a career and his restless troubadour spirit has amassed an extraordinary catalogue of over 40 albums. Over the two decades since claiming his own musical independence, Stephenson has released a succession of strong self-produced albums such as Yogi in my House, The Lilac Tree, Collective Force, Western Eagle, California Star,  Haunted Highway and Bayswater Road. 2019 saw the launch and celebration of Daintees album Chi Chi & The Jaguar and solo albums Brady Square and Thomasina. His critically acclaimed albums from the 80s have been re-recorded and celebrated in  strong 30th anniversary tours. This year, 2020,  sees the 30th anniversary celebration of Salutation Road  and another exciting UK tour with the band. 2017 Stephenson was invited to perform in Glasgow at the BBC Quay Sessions with Roddy Hart and Tom Robinson was delighted to invite him in for a session at BBC Radio 6 in London at the end of November. Oct 2019, Tom Robinson invited him back for another BBC Radio 6 session and choose  several of Martin’s tracks for his favourite songs of the week. Legendary Scottish comedian and musician, Billy Connolly, dedicated a section of the 2019 BBC Scotland TV documentary, Made in Scotland  to Martin Stephenson. Requesting a live performance of his hauntingly beautiful Rain from the Bolivia album, and despite frail health, Connolly chose to stay and pass the time with kindred spirit and fellow creative soul. Stephenson humbly responded with the gift of Billy’s Banjo, a freshly penned and composed song to his brother in spirit. Connolly called him “My kind of musician”. Martin has toured with John Martyn , Roy Buchanan, Aztec Camera, Microdisney, The Go-Betweens,  Hothouse Flowers, Bob Geldof, Del Amitri, Janis Ian, Indigo girls and Melissa Etheridge, but remains endearingly modest and unaffected. When not writing, recording or gigging, which isn’t often, he’s in his home near Invergordon in the Scottish Highlands, much involved with his own label, Barbaraville. The Cromarty Stables, as well as being one of Martin’s closest gigs, is also one of his favourites. Martin Stephenson really is a spiritual traveller with a style all his own. For him the highest level of achievement is kindness, the greatest currency good will. DUE TO COVID-19: POSTPONED, NEW DATE TBC Seer Quartet was founded in early 2019 at the Royal Academy of Music in London. As current undergraduate students, they receive regular coaching from eminent chamber musicians including Martin Outram, Jim Sleigh, Jo Cole, and members of the Doric String Quartet. In their first year together, the quartet have performed across the UK, including at concert series in Norwich and London. They have a strong commitment to outreach work, and have recently been working in collaboration with Open Academy and Camden Music with primary schools in North London.  The quartet will perform Ludwig van Beethoven, String Quartet in G, Op.18 No.2 and Benjamin Britten, String Quartet No.1  Musician Biographies  Violinist Elodie Chousmer-Howelles is a Calleva Trust scholar at the Royal Academy of Music and enjoys performing both as a soloist and chamber musician across the UK. Elodie has performed at venues such as the Elgar Room (at the Royal Albert Hall), the House of Lords and the Wigmore Hall in London. Elodie currently plays a Zygmuntowicz violin on loan from the Royal Academy of Music.    Emma Baird is a Scottish violinist studying at the Royal Academy of Music under Ying Xue from the Doric String Quartet. She started playing at the age of 4 with Christine Nelson and later studied with Professor Andrea Gajic at RCS Junior Conservatoire and St Mary’s Music School. Since beginning her undergraduate studies, Emma has taken part in numerous chamber music and orchestral projects. She is also an ambassador of the Benedetti Foundation.    Rachel Spence (hailing from Fortrose on the Black Isle) studies viola with Martin Outram at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she holds the Sir Elton John Scholarship. She has appeared as a soloist at festivals including the London Strings Festival, and been principal viola of the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra and the Berlin Opera Academy. She plays a Panormo/Milanese viola c.1790, on loan from the Royal Academy of Music.  Sophie Oliver ​is an undergraduate music scholar at The Royal Academy of Music. Prior to starting at The Academy, she was an active member of the Bromley Youth Music Trust, where she won the Rotary Trotman Final. A supporter of charity projects, she organised her own solo recital, raising nearly £2000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Inverness-based cellist, Katy Bell, plays works for cello and piano by Faure, accompanied by Robin Versteeg. The two Cello Sonatas were written in the last decade of Faure’s life and are different to his earlier popular works. This concert is an opportunity to hear the poetry of these late works. The Alistair McCulloch Trio annual Scottish tour has become a firm fixture on the traditional music calendar. Featuring renowned Ayrshire fiddler McCulloch, alongside past Scottish folk instrumentalist of the year, Aaron Jones of Old Blind Dogs (bouzouki, guitar and vocals) and founder member of Capercaillie Marc Duff (whistles), the trio has gained a formidable reputation for its dynamic concert performances. Collectively Alistair, Aaron and Marc have appeared on dozens of albums. Their widely acclaimed ‘Off the Hook’ release perfectly encapsulates the feel of their live shows, blending traditional, contemporary and self-penned material. As the name suggests, Highland Swing is a swing and jazz Big Band based in the Highlands. Formed in the summer of 2004 by a group of jazz enthusiasts, it aims to keep the music of the swing and dance eras alive. Scotland-based singer-songwriter Lizabett Russo merges her native traditions with elements of contemporary jazz, avant garde folk and world music, a range of influence effortlessly spanned by her powerfully versatile voice. The BBC have championed her work - featuring on both BBC Radio 3 and Radio 6 as well as the BBC stage at Latitude Festival. She has also toured extensively around Europe, Canada and Asia. Musically Russo's influences are wide ranging. Echoes of her native Transylvania (Romania) are beautifully interwoven with avant garde folk, contemporary jazz and world music. Lizabett will be accompanied by the award-winning jazz guitarist Graeme Stephen. Today he leads and contributes to a multitude of musical projects in Scotland and overseas, playing a wide array of styles from free improvised jazz to Scottish folk. Stephens peerless improvisational skills and talent for composition make him one of Scotlands most exciting and prodigious musical talents.
